A cloud of dust circles a young star. You have a handful of cards and a limited number of turns before the star changes, swells, or dies. What will be left orbiting it?

Based on my tabletop board game project, In Proto Orbits you build a planetary system one card at a time. You gather dust into planetesimals, grow them into rocky worlds and giants, capture moons, and bring life into being. Then you try to keep it all alive through comets, rogue planets, passing stars, solar flares and the star's own old age.

How it plays

  • Drag a card onto an orbit. Valid targets light up, and hovering shows exactly what will happen before you commit.
  • Nothing carries over. Matter, Gas and Energy reset every turn, so each turn is a small puzzle about what you can do right now.
  • Every body affects its neighbours. Heavy planets push stress onto the orbits beside them, and unstable worlds collide. Giants can shield the inner planets, but their shields need time to recharge.
  • Threats are announced two turns ahead, so you can see disasters coming and prepare for them.

Eight stars, eight ways to play

A calm red dwarf. A Sun-like star that becomes a red giant and swallows its inner orbits. A massive star that ends in a supernova. A binary system with two habitable zones. A violent young T Tauri star. A dim white dwarf. A pulsar that sweeps the system with radiation. Each star has its own timeline, events and goals.
